Exposed Aggregate vs Stamped Concrete: Which Finish Is Right for You?
Two of the most popular decorative concrete finishes are stamped and exposed aggregate. Both look great, but they're very different in appearance, cost, and maintenance. Here's an honest comparison from a contractor who installs both.
What's the Difference?
Stamped concrete is exactly what it sounds like — concrete stamped with patterns (like stone, brick, or wood) before it sets, then colored to look like natural materials. Exposed aggregate is a different technique: regular concrete is poured, then the top layer of cement paste is washed away to reveal the decorative stone (aggregate) underneath.
Appearance: Stamped concrete mimics other materials — natural stone, brick, slate, wood planks. It offers virtually unlimited patterns and color combinations. Exposed aggregate has a more natural, textured look — you see the actual stones, pebbles, and sand in the concrete. It's beautiful but has a more limited design range.
Pros and Cons of Each
Cost: Stamped concrete typically runs $20-33/sqft, while exposed aggregate is slightly less at $18-28/sqft. The difference is mainly in labor — stamping requires specialized stamps, color hardener, and release agent. Exposed aggregate uses standard concrete with selected decorative aggregates.
Durability and maintenance: Both are extremely durable and long-lasting (25-30+ years). Both need resealing every 2-3 years. Exposed aggregate has a naturally slip-resistant surface because of the textured stones — making it great for pool decks and walkways. Stamped concrete can be slippery when wet unless you add a non-slip additive to the sealer (which we always do at ZBL).
Where each one shines: Stamped concrete is best when you want your patio to look like natural stone or brick at a fraction of the cost. It's our most popular choice for backyard patios and front entryways. Exposed aggregate is best for driveways, pool decks, and walkways where you want a natural look with built-in traction.
Which One Should You Choose?
You can also combine both — stamped concrete patio with an exposed aggregate border, or a stamped driveway with exposed aggregate walkways. The contrast between the two finishes creates a high-end custom look.
