Pool Deck Resurfacing Options: Concrete Overlay vs Full Replacement

Design

If your pool deck is looking rough — cracks, discoloration, rough surface, or uneven spots — you have two main options: resurface it or replace it entirely. The right choice depends on the condition of the existing concrete underneath.

Signs Your Pool Deck Needs Attention

Signs your pool deck needs work: widespread surface cracking or spider-web patterns, spalling or flaking surface, significant color fading, uneven or sunken sections that create trip hazards or puddles, and rough texture that's uncomfortable on bare feet. If you're seeing any of these, it's time to act before the problems get worse.

Resurfacing (concrete overlay) involves applying a thin layer (1/4 to 1/2 inch) of polymer-modified concrete over the existing deck. It can be stamped, textured, or colored to give you a completely new look. Cost: $8-15/sqft. Best for: decks with minor surface damage but a structurally sound base underneath.

Resurfacing vs Full Replacement

Full replacement means demolishing the old deck and pouring a brand new one. This is more expensive ($15-25/sqft) but gives you a completely fresh start. Best for: decks with structural cracks, significant settling, or base failure. If the underlying concrete is compromised, an overlay will just crack again.

How to tell which you need: if you can slide a screwdriver into the cracks easily or see cracks that go all the way through the slab, you need full replacement. If the cracks are surface-level only and the slab is still level and solid, resurfacing is the way to go.

Best Materials for Pool Decks

For pool decks specifically, the surface material matters more than anywhere else. You need something that's cool underfoot, slip-resistant when wet, comfortable on bare skin, and resistant to pool chemicals. Stamped concrete with a non-slip sealer checks all these boxes. Exposed aggregate is another excellent option — the textured surface provides natural traction.

Color choice matters around pools. Lighter colors stay cooler in direct sun. A dark stamped deck might look amazing, but it'll be uncomfortable to walk on barefoot in July. We recommend sandstone, buff, or light gray base colors for pool decks.
